Another Weird Bee Post

We have a small overflow pond that hydrates all of the local deer, our cats and the bees. This body of water keeps us endlessly entertained. We head outside to visit tadpoles, fish, snails and eggs on a daily basis. Last Thursday we found a drowning bee at dusk. Oliver pulled her out of the water and named her "Mac."

It was cold and Mac was wet, so we took her inside. Oliver read her a book as she sat drying on a pillow.

We figured she would recover faster with a belly full of honey. She perked right up!

It was getting dark, so Mac wouldn't fly back to the hive. Oliver was thrilled when I told him Mac would be sleeping inside with us.

He made her a bed and syringe fed her some water. We tucked Mac in next to the heater and went to bed.

The next morning, Mac happily flew back to the hive. To thank us, she circled back around and pooped on Glenn. No, thank YOU Mac.

  1. I love it! I'm thinking we have a future vet in the making. He is just so great! I wish we were closer to experience all of these sweet tales in person:(

  2. You never fail to entertain - this is just the very best bee story - how about that for a children's book, Jess? I think that one would make it big....pooped on Gleen? What's that all about? How can you even see bee poop? I didn't even know they did that, I thought everything that came out of them was, well, honey? (he, he, he,)....you guys are too much! I love you!
Doris :-) (give that boy of yours a BIG hug from me)
p.s. Farmer bee is doing well in the voting poll, cut UBU's mom is really campaigning for her dog and he's way ahead...you may have to pull out your big guns...voting continues till next Wednesday!

  3. p.s. I hope you don't mind, Jess, but I linked back to your story on my side bar with a photo of Oliver wearing his beekeeper shirt and the bee on it - this story is just too good not to share ;-)

    Hugs,
    Doris

  4. Thanks Erin and Doris. Doris, I've actually been working on my second attempt at a children's book with this story as my inspiration. Thanks for the link!

  7. Wonderful story, thanks for sharing it ! Your bees are lucky to have such loving care. When one of mine is swimming wildly in the water bowl, I just help it out and let it go. Who knew I could do so much more !

  8. Thanks so much for sharing this lovely story. I too have done this and bravely posted it on my blog, worried people would realize I'm a little eccentric. But as I'm sure you and Oliver have realized, it's a great opportunity to get close and personal with a creature and learn more about it.

  9. What a beautiful story. Love the pic of the bee on the pillow. I'm glad we aren't the only ones crazy enough to do "bee CPR" - I swear sometimes they wink at me when we are doing hive checks!

  12. How tender
I absolutely loved how smitten Oliver was with Mac..and Doris was right, Oliver and Mac would make a lovely childrens book...especially with many children being so fearful of bees.

    Peace ~ Rene

  13. I love this little story about the bee saving boy. :) Very cute and a great message to kids. Doris recommended I visit and I am glad I did.

I too am working on a kids book. I'm publishing independently and will have books in about 30 days. It's been quite a process. Fun but challenging and some times stressful.

Are you doing artwork or just writing?
